Camphill Aberdeen City and Shire community, Simeon Care for the Elderly is celebrating the achievements of staff member, Donna Shearer who received ProjectScotland’s first ever ‘moscar’ award at a prestigious ceremony in Edinburgh.

Donna was nominated for the award by ProjectScotland volunteer, 16 year old Eilidh McGrattan who had been working within the Bieldside located community for the past six months.  ProjectScotland is a national charity providing opportunities which help young people realise their potential through volunteering.  Donna commented:

“When I first met Eilidh she was very shy, having had a tough time at school.  Her confidence and morale was at an all time low as a result.  I wanted to help her learn about working with the elderly and people with special needs, encouraging her desire to enter the nursing profession - I could see great potential in her

“Volunteering options within Camphill’s communities provide fantastic opportunities for young people.  It has given Eilidh the confidence to follow her aspirations.”

Over the six month placement in Simeon, Donna has completely changed life for Eilidh, who is about to begin a one-year access course to Nursing, leading to a degree at university.

Eilidh continues:

“Donna has given me so much support and training – she’s an amazing and understanding woman.  I’ve learned so much from her, involving me in community life and getting me to try and learn new things every day.  Without my placement in Simeon I know I would never have had the confidence to apply to nursing.  She’s such an inspiration to me and this award is a small token of my gratitude towards all her hard work and dedication.”

There are many volunteering opportunities within Camphill communities in the UK and Ireland, with ProjectScotland providing opportunities for people in Scotland aged 16 - 25.  More than 700 people live and work in the six Camphill communities in Camphill Aberdeen City and Shire, providing support for people with special needs and learning difficulties.
