Appeal for new therapy centre

Open for 70th anniversary year

Camphill School Aberdeen is launching a £100,000 appeal to help fund a planned new therapy centre that will benefit individuals who have special needs.

The new £305,000 centre is to be built at the Camphill campus of Camphill School Aberdeen on Milltimber Brae in Aberdeen. It is intended that the therapy centre will open in time to mark the 70th anniversary of the very first Camphill community.

It was at Camphill Estate in Milltimber, in June 1940, that the Camphill pioneers opened their first community to help children with special needs. Now the Camphill name has spread around the world, with more than 100 Camphill centres in 23 countries worldwide.

Commenting on the fundraising appeal, Karen Johnston, chairperson of the Society of Friends of Camphill and a parent of a pupil at Camphill School Aberdeen, said:
“Camphill School Aberdeen is held in the highest regard as a centre of excellence that helps children with special needs to reach their potential. An important element in the school’s continuing success is the therapeutic programme it provides, tailored to the individual needs of the pupils.

“At the moment they are provided in the shared facilities of the school. The new therapy centre will allow more suitable facilities that will help to improve their effectiveness. As well as providing therapeutic support for the school, Camphill School Aberdeen plans to open the new centre to support individuals in the wider local community.

The new centre will have five specialised rooms for massage, play, oil bath, art and counselling, speech and drama. The centre will also include a kitchen and reception area.

The total project cost for the new therapy centre is £305,000. The appeal is seeking to raise £100,000 with the balance coming from the school’s holding company, Camphill Rudolf Steiner Estates Ltd, a registered charity.

Construction will begin in autumn 2009 and it is anticipated that completion will be in spring 2010.

Camphill School Aberdeen has been recognised in the most recent HMIE/Care Commission report for providing ‘sector-leading’ standards, providing integrated education, care and support for children with special needs. The school also holds the Autism Accreditation in recognition of the standards it provides for children with autistic spectrum disorders.
